Fall 2007

Level of Activity 2006 & 2007
The total number of grants made during 2006, including the holiday grants at the end of the year, totaled 289, nearly the same as 2005. Of these, 152 were regular grants made throughout the year and the remaining 137 went to help make the holidays a little brighter for a seriously ill child. Additionally, two special projects were undertaken in 2006. At Washington Children’s Hospital, we sponsored the “Hall of Heroes” which included the work of the pediatric art therapy group and framed, professional portrait photographs of cancer survivors, as well as refurbishing the hallway where the photographs are hung. The second project, in response to an urgent request, was to step in at the last minute and sponsor the holiday party at INOVA Fairfax Children’s Hospital when the original (and long time) sponsor was unable to continue. The total value of all grants and the two projects was $98,926. As a result of an extraordinary contribution from Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, described in the previous Newsletter, we finished the year well in the black. This year, 2007, has been our most active yet with more than 135 regular grants made through the end of September.

Recent grants include:
• $400 for the security deposit on an apartment for 6 year old Nikki with ALL Leukemia and her family. Nikki’s family had been living at a motel at $325 a week. Rent on the new apartment is $700 a month.

• $406 to restore the natural gas service for the family of three year old Tanya with neuroblastoma. The family’s unpaid gas bill was approximately $200. Additional Columbia Gas charges to restore the family’s service doubled the total to $406. Tanya’s family is one of several we were able to help who were facing a shut off of service by Columbia Gas.

• $400 for winter coats and warm clothes for 7year old TJ with osteosarcoma and his younger brother. The family relocated to the area to receive better treatment for his cancer, but were not prepared for winter weather (assuming it arrives).

• $94 for a refurbished Nintendo Game System and two games for 10 year old Jorge with Wilms Tumor.

• $600 for a generator to ensure that 6 year old Christine’s electric pump continues to operate during interruptions of electrical power.

• $600 for three plane tickets for 12 year old Jaime and his family, who were in the U.S. on visitor visas and not entitled to U.S. medical care, to return to Central America for treatment.

Goblin Gallop XIV
The “Valvoline Instant Oil Change Goblin Gallop” 5K Race and 1K Fun Run will again be held at the Fairfax Corner Shopping Center in Fairfax, VA. With more than 1200 runners and walkers, including 250 children in the Fun Run, the Goblin Gallop is a happening event which continues to evolve. This year’s Race is not only a USATF-certified 5K “chip” race and a 1K Fun Run, but also features a Moon Bounce, Panera bagels, hot dogs, fresh popcorn, bananas & apples, and great music by the Sparkplugs. There are prizes to the top three finishers, male and female, in all five year age categories, plus many random prizes, including Redskin tickets and costume prizes, with glow-in-the-dark t-shirts for all, race medals for the fun runners and much more!

We also have the greatest sponsor in Valvoline Instant Oil Change and the man-in-charge, and our MC on Race Day, Tim Ku-Pietro. Stop by and say hello to Tim on Race Day.

Combined Federal Campaign No. 8931 and United Way No. 59426
This year, OMB saw fit to assign new numbers to all United Way agencies. The Combined Federal Campaign, however, declined to do so. According, we now have two Agency Numbers: No. 59426 for the United Way and No. 8931 for the Combined Federal Campaign. Contributions to the CFC and the United Way remain very important to our efforts and we thank you for your continued generosity. In addition to the actual revenue received, receiving CFC/UW revenue evenly-spaced throughout the year, as we do, is very helpful.

Special Thanks
As always, we thank all of you whose generosity has made possible our support of so many worthy families. We particularly want to thank neighbors Bob and Helen Terrill, Dr. Jerry and Adrienne Goldfarb and the Fairfax Animal Hospital, Norman and Marilyn McLennan, John and Christine Melody, Charles Rankin and Kate Shafer, the Gustafsons, and Bill & Diane Millen. We also want to thank Dorothy Sibert and Sellers Smith, the Michelotti, Pautler, Chase, and Nixon families, Janice Gaynor, the Slavin Family Trust, Dr. Robert Blum, Antoinette Girio. Sylvia and John Miller, Joan Peppin and Michael Woods, and Geraldine Guggemos.
